Vaccinate Your Baby Boomers
|
|
When we mention vaccines, we often think of children—perhaps sniffling at a doctor's office, with a colorful Band-Aid on their arm. However, the need for vaccination doesn't end when your patients become adults. Despite this fact, adult vaccination rates remain low throughout the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following vaccinations for adults:
- Influenza - once a year, for everyone 6 months or older
- Tdap/Td - all ages, once for Tdap and once every 10 years for Td booster
- Herpes zoster (shingles) - 2 doses of recombinant (RZV) 2-6 months apart; 50 years of age or older preferred
- MMR - once, all adults born in 1957 or later
- Hepatitis A - 2 dose series for adults who have a specific risk or seek protection
- Meningococcal - 1 or more doses depending on indication
- Pneumococcal - All adults 65 and older, 1 dose of PCV13, followed by one dose of PPSV23 at least 1 year after
Many of the recommended vaccinations for adults depend upon not only age, but lifestyle and high-risk medical conditions as well. Even if your patients received the vaccines they needed as children, the protection from some vaccines can wear off. Helping your adult patients understand the importance of adult vaccination is a good idea for the same reason they were immunized as children: vaccines are the best protection we have against a number of infectious diseases.
