Researchers Receive Grant to Study Most Effective Treatment for Kawasaki Disease

Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine, Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego and Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at University of California, Davis, have received a $2 million grant from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute for a three-year study to look at the effectiveness of two treatment options for children with Kawasaki disease who are resistant to initial therapy. Study Shows Topical Use of Fibrin Sealant Can Reduce Blood Loss and Need for Transfusion in Total Knee and Hip Arthroplasty

Results of a meta-analysis that assessed the safety and effectiveness of topical administration of fibrin sealants on postoperative blood loss and blood requirements in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty showed that it can decrease the need for transfusion, decrease total blood loss, decrease blood drainage loss and shorten the length of hospital stay. Bivalirudin (Fresenius Kabi)

Bivalirudin for injection is a direct thrombin inhibitor indicated for use as an anticoagulant in patients 1) with unstable angina undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty; 2) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with provisional use of glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor as in the REPLACE-2 study; and 3) with, or at risk of, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia or heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis syndrome, undergoing PCI. It is available for intravenous use, and is supplied in a single-use vial containing 250 mg of Bivalirudin. It is intended for use with aspirin, and has been studied only in patients receiving concomitant aspirin.
